ps2 loco stalls wehen reversing

I have a ps2 rs3 mth diesel that upon reversing directions the engine stalls. I checked the motor and truck connection and the wheels spin fine in both directions under power. If you nudge the engine slightly it will then move. if you reverse directions and move the throttle up quickly it doesnt stall. Any words of wisdom??

Are the wheels and pickup rollers clean?

Yes thanks the wheels were filthy. Took a while to clean but the engine is cruising now!
