I've run into a few DCS related problems this year while setting up my seasonal layout. At first I could not add my new PS2 and PS3 locos to my DCS system (Rev L TIU, Remote ver 4.20). After searching this forum and calling MTH I performed a remote reset and was able to add all my locos again including the new ones. Now i'm having trouble with my premier UP 844 northern steam engine MTH model 20-3044-1. Last year the smoke unit would randomly turn itself on when the loco was powered up on dcs. This year it powers up, I hear the startup sound and the loco sits there and idles. The whistle/bell/lights do not work and the loco will not move. After performing a "feature reset" the loco works fine until I turn it off. When I restart it, the same thing happens all over again. The loco also will not move in conventional mode. I thought the battery was dead causing the memory to reset so I checked the battery and it was 8+Volts. I'm not really sure what to look at next so I thought I would post here and see if anyone had any suggestions.

MAtt,  Reading a battery unloaded with Voltmeter is not a good test.

Start your engine up and after it settles out, turn the transformer off and listen to how the engine shuts down.  If it turns right off, the battery maybe dead, the battery connector could be disconnected, or bad, or there could be a circuit board issue with the battery control circuit.

If sounds cut right out, you can test with a new 9V alkaline battery.  If it work then the issue is a dead battery.  G

Sorry for the late reply... just wanted to give you guys an update. I was finally able to have the time to work on the locomotive today. I bought a new battery and charged it up. Before installing the battery I applied a 150mA load to the battery and watched the voltage. The new battery dropped to 8V. I did the same test on the old battery and the voltage dropped to 3V. I also found the date 12/05 on the old battery. Locomotive runs great now. No issues even after turning the power off.

Thanks for your help guys.
