I have a PS1 Smoke unit that was modified as part of a  Steam Locomotive PS2 upgrade.

 

The fan works fine but there is no warmth to the exhaust and no smoke is produced when there is ample fluid present.

 

I took the unit out of the engine and measured the resistance at the smoke unit and at the 10 pin connector in the engine. Both read approximately 10 Ohms.

 

Is this an appropriate reading? If so what should I check next?

 

I have not run this engine with smoke for a while. I did the PS2 upgrade and I am sure that it worked when I was done.

10 ohms is about right. Nominal resistance across the elements is 8 ohms, but the wiring will add a little more.

I would measure the voltage across the elements with the engine fired up and the smoke unit on. You should see a few volts DC.

If not, you either have a wiring issue, or your board has a fritzed FET. 

Perhaps GGG or someone else knows which components on the board are at fault.

I have tested the wires back to the PS2 board. The brown wire from the heat element is good to the board. The purple wire from the heat element is fed from the white and yellow motor leads, in the engine, thru diodes. The electrical path is continuous. The motor runs so the purple is OK.

 

So it appears that the problem is in the PS2 board. Does that make sense?

 

What would cause the board source to the heating element to stop functioning?
