Some of the 4 ohms have failed, but Paul is also correct that the audio chip can be bad.

Assuming you turned the Vol Pot up or are using DCS, I would measure the ohms between the speaker terminals.  It should be 4 ohms.  If much higher or much lower the speaker is bad.  If it is low like a short 0 to 1 ohms then you may need to have th board looked at to see if the audio amp blew.

I do the repairs and also have speaker and parts if you need them.  E-mail in profile.  G

Ok at this point you guys have me hesitant to touch the thing hahaha... I have tried reset sequences, charging then replacing the battery, and still no success so im wondering now do i order a speaker and a battery and hope it works or what? I would send it out to be professionally looked at if i was ensured a good price and safety of the train. I am located in new york anybody do repairs?

I don't think the battery is the issue for this.  Either the audio amp blew or the speaker went bad, or the connector came undone.  I assume the engine runs fine with all functional control except sounds?

I do repairs, but the shipping will raise the cost of this repair.  Is there a hobby shop with MTH tech some where close?

I can replace the audio chip if that is bad, and that will save you the cost of a processor board.  You can contact me via e-mail in profile.  G
