PS2 steam fix/upgrade

My PS2 Light Mikado stopped running unexpectedly a while back, and now can't be recognized by DCS. All it does when track power is applied is squeal very loud. I'm guessing it needs a new board, and I might be interested in upgrading it to PS3 while I'm at it if that's possible. Is it best to send it back to MTH, or does anybody know of someone who does good repair or upgrade?

For openers, what is the engine product number? What was the battery condition when you recently ran it?
