From the Protosound2 site:

"When the Upgrade packages are released, we will also be making available soundsets specifically designed for the upgrade boards.

When you install the PS2 Upgrade hardware, they will not have any specific sound set installed. You will be able to choose which sound set you would like to put on the specific train you are upgrading. These will be special sound sets downloadable only from PROTSOUND2.COM.

The sound sets available on MTH-RAILKING.COM are not compatable.

The Upgrade specific sound sets will be available when the hardware is available."

I thought I understood one should download a similar locomotive sound set, for a locomotive which already had Proto2 ...

Looking for upgrade sound sets for already released Master kits, I don't find anything at the PROTOSOUND2.COM site, like for a DD40AX or a GG1 upgrade ...?  For a couple of the searchs the website failed with a 550 error ...

What am I missing? (beside the soundset I mean ..)

Hi Kerrigan,

That verbiage is VERY old and out of date.  Back when the PS2 upgrade kits were first released they came with the first generation 3 volt boards.  At that time the majority of PS2 engines had been built with 5 volt boards.  The 5v sound files are not compatible with 3v boards.  MTH started offering tweeked versions of the old 5v sound files that were compatible with the 3v boards.  In order to keep things straight and still make both versions available they created a separate section of the protosound2 website dedicated to the tweeked sound files.  When MTH rebuilt their website a few years ago they got rid of the old pages for the tweeked sound files.  Almost everything that was done in 5v has since been done in 3v, so the duplication is no longer necessary.

When you do your conversions just download the sound file for an engine cataloged in 2004 or later.  They will be 3v and compatible with the board in your upgrade kit.

Hope that helps.

Hey Dave,

Thanks for the explanation of the 3v versus 5v however I myself have hit a major problem.  See I have a 30-1395-1 which is a 5v engine, but MTH only offers both the upgrade and original PS2 file in 3v. When I downloaded it into MTH loader (vers. 2.3) it would not work.  Sooo, being the novice that I was decided to find a file that WAS 5v in that class and upload it to my engine to test. Now I have no watch dog signal, no lights, no sound, only direction on my 4.20 DCS remote (forward and reverse). I did a factory reset and feature reset, but to no avail. Did I just blow up my board in the engine? Any insight would be great.

To: Kerrigan...sorry to hijack your thread.

Coal

Coal, If you go to MTH Home page and do a search on your engine number, it will come up.  Select your engine, and you will see a PS2 icon.  Click it to download your original PS2 File.

5V PS2 display as PS2.  The 3V displays as PS2 with a 3V super imposed on the Icon.

If you can't find a file, e-mail MTH.  Service should have it or can create it.  G

You can tell by the port where the battery charger plugs in. Round is 5 volt, rectangle with 2 pins is 3 volt.

Hey Joe, thanks for the info, I checked the tender and it is a 3V like you are describing, I rechecked MTH website again for the 30-1395-1 just to be sure I was connecting the right file with the engine number here as GG described. I re-downloaded the file and though the file states a "3V O/G" in the loader, the loader finds the engine as a 5V and will not let it continue with the install.   I guess I may have to harass MTH about my silent Turbine.  Having a silent engine running around is never as a much fun. Thanks for the assistance fellas.

Hi Coal,

I re-downloaded the file and though the file states a "3V O/G" in the loader, the loader finds the engine as a 5V and will not let it continue with the install.

Give us some more info about your setup.

What operating system is running on your computer?

How are you connecting the computer to your TIU?

What revision TIU do you have?

What is version of the firmware is loaded on the TIU?

What version of the DCS Loader program are you using?

What power supply are you using to power the TIU and/or locomotive?

Have you successfully loaded a sound file to another engine with this setup?

Have you ever performed TIU and remote firmware upgrades or cloned a remote with this setup?

If you can answer those questions we'll be in a better position to help.
