I have a weaver steam engine that lost chuff and speed control after a derailment. I have tried the tender on another engine and it works fine. Would this indicate a bad tach reader?

You swapped tenders with a DCS locomotive? That's typically not a great idea.
You say PS32, is this an upgrade with the standard steam upgrade kit? If so, the loss of chuff and speed control is likely a broken wire between the tender and the tach sensor in the locomotive. Start by checking all the wires for continuity. The tach readers don't go bad a lot, but they do go bad. However, nine out of ten times it'll be the wiring. Another issue is a tach tape that come off the flywheel.
usually when the tach reader is bad the engine takes off run away at top full speed as soon as you start it!
Checked wiring and tach tape, all look good. This is a ps3/2 upgrade done several years ago. The tender worked fine on another steamer also a ps3/2 upgrade. Loco will start up ok but when throttle is advanced it goes full speed with no chuff, Direction control works and all other functions.

And that's exactly what he's describing! Time to change the tach reader if the tape and spacing is good. Being an upgrade, I've seen the spacing be off enough to prevent proper operation, 1mm +/- about 20%
when LMV358 op-amp fails in the ps 3/2 the engine they run wide open you loose speed control of the motor. even ps 2 3 volt boards had the same issue. this is not a common problem but either the microprocessor board power supply can cause loss of speed control or the lvm358 operational amplifier IC can cause this issue! asc techs can sometimes repair your boards or can sell u a new ps3/2 board!

Since he tested the tender on another upgrade conversion successfully, how exactly could this be the boards in the tender?
This problem is in the locomotive, not the tender!
I checked the tach gap , exactly .030 in. even tried a new tach tape. no luck. Any one know the part number for the reader?
I'd ring the wires out with a meter from the tach reader all the way to the tender before hacking away at the tach reader. There are a few readers, depending on the spacing of the sensor from the board.
- AG-0000033 Tach Reader board (no spacer) for Mabuchi motor w/ 30mm flywheel
- AG-0000047 Tach Reader board (1.5 mm spacer) for Mabuchi motor w/ 27mm flywheel
- AG-0000041 Tach Reader board (2.2 mm spacer) for Pr Steam with 30 mm flywheel
- AG-0000058 Tach Reader board (no spacer) with hole in pcb for RK L-3 Mabuchi w/ 30mm flywheel
I checked continuity on all pins of the locomotive plug, all checked good. I am just using the tach reader that comes in the up grade kit. I use it as it comes with the rubber spacer. I use ca glue to mount the pittman motor bracket to the motor bracket on the engine and space it with .03 feeler guage.
What are you going to do when it comes time to install the upgrade kit without the tach reader?
Are you saying the only way to get a tach reader is to buy another upgrade it?!!
Tach readers available. They do fail. More so than the opamp on a PS-32 board in my experience. I have only replaced one opamp o a 32 board.
Part number for the tach reader that comes with upgrade kit?
I gave you all the part numbers above, the upgrade kit has the AG-0000041 I believe.

No, I was just curious why you were tearing apart a $200 kit.
Received new tach reader board today, took care of problem. Thanks for the input.
