Had a dead short at 5.6 VAC and after correcting that I could not get AC power on the 2 pins in the 4 pin connector

on the PS3 board.  This is a 20-20271-1  SD70ACe  equipped to run 2 Rail or 3 Rail by selection on the switch.

Took awhile to find out why I could not get power to the ps3 board - the 3 Rail/2 Rail switch would not stay in position and connect the black and brown wires go get a ground to the 4 pin connector black wire.  Found this out by putting a meter on the power pins on the 4 pin connector and pushed the switch to hold in the 3 Rail position.

Yes - that worked, now had power to the on the connector pins.

In looking at the parts manual, it does not list the 3 Rail/2 Rail switch.  Do I really need it if this locomotive will run 3 Rail only?  Can I solder the switch pins, each side separate of course, together?  Does anyone have a functioning 3 Rail/2 Rail switch?

thanks,

bruce

Any generic switch with the same poles would work. Like John says they are cheap and made poorly. Inn most cases they'll hold up and do the job.

I've found one burned out and another dead from the factory. The PS2 polarity switch is the same quality and I've found those DOA as well. That's important for running in 2 rail mode on older models.

I've even found a smoke pot that shorted out when turned to zero. I believe that was from rough handling?

It's good to check out all avenues when troubleshooting. The techs have a board tester to narrow down what's wrong. I've used known good working frames.  .....

Before I get corrected please don't put a good board into a frame that maybe shorted!

That's not correct troubleshooting. That's asking for more trouble.
