I run a Milwaukee Road heavyweight consist of 6 16" cars. I would run more if I could find more. I know that back in the heavyweight days, passenger trains leased Pullman sleepers for their railroad. Do any of you run a passenger consist with the colors of your railroad and also the green of Pullman? The only company that I've seen them at a reasonable cost is Williams with their 15.5" cars. Paul,
Seaboard used to mix types of cars all the time. There was an earlier topic on Consists, do a search to read more.
Here's a photo of my passenger train:
I only have 5 passenger cars plus the REA Express car. 3 of the cars (RPO, Diner, and Business Car) are Green and the other 2 are Budd lightweight cars made by OK Engines.
The books I have on the SAL have many photos of passenger trains consisting of Budd and Pullman cars. Seaboard even painted some of the cars the colors of other RRs so they would match (Illinois Central colors is one that comes to mind).
Several of the Class 1's would put together an Consist of matched equipment when an particular train was brand new, but after an few runs, you would see different types of equipment in said consist.
The Big Class 1's like the NYC would keep an dedicated consist together at all times, since they ran mostly Pullman Cars of certain types, they always kept certain cars in reserve in case an said car was sidelined for mechanical work, and of course this would be based on reservation too.
I am sure the Milwaukee Road did the same thing with there dedicated trains.
I hope this helps out.
If you can find an copty of Arthur Dubin's "Some Classic Trains", or an copy ofhis second book "More Classic Train's, i am sure you will find an section on the Milwaukee Road.
