Bob/AM Hobbies had a sale on Atlas track 'til the end of January and with about an hour left to the month I bit the bullet and ordered some...I was waffling between MTH Scaletrax and the Atlas line, but between the odd tie spacing on the Scaletrax (it looks Euro to me) and the photos of forumite Hot Water's layout in OGR and here on the forum -- he uses Atlas track -- I went that route...I need to do a tiny bit of work to the 13'x20' layout room, but the wife has been on me to start construction (how's that for a twist!) so now I have some motivation...

How this applies to 3RS: the single track, around-the-wall, continuous mainline will have O-80 curves with easements...some of the locomotives and rolling stock will be specifically set up with KDs and fixed pilots and some engines and rolling stock will still be classic Hi-Rail...

I have 2'x2' cardboard flats from the warehouse where I work, so I plan on putting those on the floor like the layout tabletop and start fiddling with track plans (I have no patience for computer programs and like the actual visual mock up)...once I start with the mock-ups, I'll start posting pictures and bugging for constructive criticism...

Anyway, here we go....

Brian,

Good luck!  I've seen the Atlas track and you'll be happy with it.

I would suggest trying a few different designs before settling on a final plan.  Lay the track down and use plastic zip-ties if you want to hold it in place.  See how you like it, if changes need to be made they're easy to do.

I use the free software from Atlas, but I use version 8.0 (I had trouble with 10.0).  There's a few quirks to using it but nothing that can't be overcome, give it a try.

Hey Bob,

I`ve got RTS on my computer, but I`m really lousy at it...I work better in 3D, so I plan on just dropping some sectional track on the floor on these cardboard flats, plop down a few buildings and maybe even some rolling stock and see if it `feels`right and has operating interest.  I`m basing it on my hometown, so I have a rough idea of what I`m going for...I just need to start messing with it when it gets here...

Cheers!

Brian
