most likely the old style cloth fishing line.  You might try a sports goods store to see if it's still available.

Thanks Bruce & Johnsgg1, I'll check the sporting goods store (kind of makes sense if you think about the cloth type fishing line, due to Lionel's connection with Airex).  Might also check different types of tubular thread like those that can be used to hang pictures instead of chains & hooks.   I'll also see if I can contact Chuck S, Henning's or one of the other parts guys and see what they can come up with/recommend.

I use ice fishing tip up line for my crane "cable"!

 

My line is black for the 2460, 6460, 6560 and others.

 

They should make in white or off white color.

Crane cable #2460-55 in black is available from online dealers.

I matched mine up with some cloth shipping twine, cant remember the number off hand though!  Picked it up 200yds for three bucks at the local hardware store
