PW smoke unit replacement issue | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

I have a PW lionel 2065 that fried it's smoke unit a little over a year ago, and I replaced it with a fluid heater built to fit into PW smoke chambers. For the past year, it has smoked better than ever, and then this week, it just stopped smoking. I opened it up and isolated the smoke unit, and it didn't produce even the slightest whisp of smoke. The wick jacketing is black on both ends and very brittle, and the windings on the heater had a break right in the middle. Could it be due to an excess of fluid? Or is the voltage a little too much for the part and I should add a resistor? Anyone else have experience or a solution for this?

Those "liquid conversion" downgrades will fail much quicker that the original nichrome heater types(many of which are pushing 70+ years old & still working).

It's the expectation those resistor types will fail. Just change it back to the original pellet type, and then you have the option of using pellets or liquids.

Also, when doing these on mine, I never put that sleeve on the resistor. It serves no purpose other than shortening the life of the resistor.

The problem with the resistor is that when you stop there is no airflow, but the power is still being pumped in and the resistor overheats.
