Finally got one of my two FM projects up and running with the old classic QSI/Proto 1 set-up.  All was fine 'til we went for the horn in neutral.  Ooops, you can't go there in this old version, at least not without a reset.  In this case, good old number 25.  So I had horn with both Z4000 buttons while running and bell with both buttons while in neutral.  That's the factory set up with this old board. So after doing a #25 reset, what happens?  Lost the bell altogether, with either button, while stopped or running !    What to do???   Consult the hive mind.....so here we are ...lost in the nineties with a protocol issue from aeons in the past. Anyone remember how to get outta this mess? I have plenty of other PS1 units without this entanglement.  FWIW, the instructions got me into this affair....and now my bell function is lost at sea !   The battery, etc. is all in good order too. Could it be a polarity thing?  The bell and horn buttons are properly oriented, but could the board somehow reversed itself??

thanks, gents !

I'll begin with two basics. You may know them. No disrespect intended.

Wiring and pure sine wave power are required for QS-1. Make certain the POWER wire goes to the center rail; the GROUND wire, to the outer rail.

Some postwar transformers have POWER and GROUND reversed (1033, for example).

QS-1 is designed for postwar Lionel transformers. Newer "electronic" transformers with "chopped" sine waves may not work or do some damage.

It could also be a loose connection on a board. WAY back in the early 1980's, QSI instructions explained how to cut a trace and connect an ACRU (AC Reverse Unit) to a full-wave bridge rectifier to supply DC to can motors.

Maybe a loose speaker wire?

Can't imagine anything being wrong with the Z4000 or its connections, cuz all else works fine...and I mean everything !   What is the factory reset for QSI ?   I'll look for it,  but don't ever remember seeing one for this series. This chooch is mating a 1993 issue bottom board with a 1994 battery and upper board.  No start up sounds, or cab chatter, or even FYS....just the absolute basics. Speaker is whatever Custom Trains jammed into the fuel tank for the squawk box horn.

Tried #18 and got back to the original issue!   Still no bell, if I program for horn in neutral.  Could the age have an effect here; this is a really early QSI bottom board, and the top boards are not a bunch younger.  Also...could a chip swap help out here?   I have a QS2+ chip that works, on the workbench, but it's the wrong flavor for this chooch  (electric sounds!). I'm going to try it and see how many of the "modern" functions I can get.
