I was looking at the O Gauge Railroading and Classic Toy Trains magazines in a store, trying to see if there's a difference in the focus or intended audience of these magazines.  I might want to get a subscription to one of them, and I had a hard time figuring out which would be better for me.  I was hoping I could get some advice from those of you who have looked at more than one issue of these magazines (I'm new to this hobby).  I'm still figuring out what kind of layout I want to build, but I think my interest probably will split the difference between what I would call a pure toy train approach and high-end high-rail.  Oh, and I'm doing this for/with kids in the toddler to elementary school age range.  Any advice is appreciated.

Why limit yourself to only one? Both ogr and classic toy trains are good.
You can also get the online versions as well unless you don't like reading on a tablet or a laptop.
I have a digital subscription to ogr and can read anywhere I want to and the plus no magazines piling up.
Your call on that part.

You realize this is the OGR Forum correct?  This magazine's Forum is the
Best advice column I've ever seen in 40 years of model railroading.  The people
On here are highly knowledgeable and helpful and every contact with the staff
Has been highly positive.

This is the best source in the O scale world.

I think I need to limit to only one so my wife doesn't think I'm nuts.  And I would rather get a printed magazine only because it's better for the kids to look at, but otherwise you make excellent points.  Thank you.

Yes, I do, and I meant no disrespect.  But the fact that this forum was the best place I could find to ask this question should probably tell me something.
Seriously, though, I thought maybe someone would say something like "well, we like OGRR because of XYZ but if you're really into ABC then CTT has more of a focus on that."
But I agree that this forum has more useful information than anything else I have found online.

I think redball summed it up nicely.  Sometimes CTT is a must have, other time there is nothing of interest there.  OGR seems to have something for me all the time.  I subscribe to ORG, CTT is a pick up if interested mag.  Being new my advise would be read everything you can so that you can establish some baseline knowledge.  There is a whole lot more to chose from these days, track traditional vs scale, control systems, you head will spin until it all sorts out.  If you are close to a club visit, ask questions, go slow and most importantly have fun.

Both mags cover the same fields of "O" gauge RR. CTT is more focused on the historical side of the hobby and has a slight edge on the toy train side [but then again "ALOT" of History]. OGR is more operator minded leaning towards High Rail. IMHO!

Thanks, that's the kind of comparison I was looking for.  That's kind of what I expected from the titles, but the distinction wasn't so clear from the particular issues I was looking at.  If I have to pick one I think OGRR will be it.
