I have a MTH n&w class a 1218 with the original ps1 system that went out ages ago and has just been sitting around. I was thinking of doing the PS2 upgrade but I'm not sure what the benefits of this would be. Does the upgrade give the engine 4 chuffs per rev? What about upgrading the smoke unit as well? I'm sure the upgrade is worth doing but what will I gain from it since I use TMCC with a TPC on my layout?

Thanks for any help. This engine has more sentimental value that anything else. Any recommendations for MTH techs doing this upgrade in the Cincy area?

Your better choice in this case may be to convert your locomotive to ERR's system with cruise and sound unless you plan to add DCS in the future. Either system will open a new set of features for your enjoyment. Personally, I like DCS a lot and would opt for it because it has more features than TMCC. If you have Legacy, then TMCC would probably be the better choice.

Proto-Sound 2 has ALWAYS let the operator choose and set the chuff rate from 1 to 16 per/rev plus off of course. It is just one of the many features.

You use the same original smoke unit with a slight modification described in the upgrade instructions.

OH a N&W Class A is a simple articulated where ALL four cylinders exhaust to the stack.  As such the exhaust would normally be some cadence of eight not four!

Thanks for the info.

The 1218 like many articulateds such as the big boy have the cylinders synchronized giving the sounds of a two cylinder train. Meaning the exhaust chuffs on two cylinders at the same time. Your are correct about 4 cylinders just not about how many chuffs would be heard.

Let's make it simple. Go to youtube and watch a video of the 1218 and count the chuffs per rev. Unless my memory is failing me and my hearing isn't as good as it once was I can hear 4 chuffs per rev. But regardless of what you say I will still set it at 4 chuffs so we can just end the discussion here.

Also why can you see one set of drivers slipping (spinning) and not the other?  And when one set is slipping how many exhausts cycles are there, only four?
