Well, I 've watched a pile of videos and it's time to start scenery.

I have put a whole scad of WS product into my shopping cart. Appalled at the "bottom line!

Some questions, particularly about plaster and adhesive products.

Their scenery cement, Hob-e-Tac glue and hydrocal products seem to be a large percentage of my order.

Anything "magic" about this stuff?

Why not white glue mixed with water and ordinary spackle/crack filler from the hardware store?

What are you using for these things?

Regarding Hob-e-Tac.  If you have a large number of figures I find it most useful for securing them to the layout since essentially you just need to put some on their feet and place on the layout with no need for the glue to set.  Other than that, white Elmers mixed with water and a drop of dish detergent works well.

It really depends on what you are making.

You can buy Plaster of Paris at Home Depot or Lowes.  Comes in a 50 lb bag.  It's cheap and you can dip papertowels in it to make scenery.  I also used a product from the same place called Strucolite.  It is a base coat plaster with a little texture.  Good for terrain, not for molds.  A cheap used blender and some foam rubber makes nice clumpy scenery products.  Just gring it up in the blender with some water and add the paint color of your choice.
