Rich,
While watch videos of some steam action, I thought of a question. What does the steam crew do if they need to use the bathroom? No. 1 doesn't pose as big of a problem as an urgent No. 2. Inquiring minds want to know

I personally don't know what Rich does, but on a coal burner, one can always use the coal pile in the tender.
This is indeed an interesting situation I had never thought of before. I will also never quite look at coal piles the same way......
"HOT WATER", IS IT ILLEGAL FOR AN ENGINEER OR FIREMAN TO LEAVE THEIR STATION WHILE THE LOCO IS UNDERWAY?
I guess thats where the "Boston steamer" got its name

Oh you didn't just say that...LOL....
Yes, there is the coal pile...
However, we don't typically run continuously for 8 or 9 hours. There are stops to be made (crew changes, meets with other trains, etc.) where the engineer or fireman can quickly go back into the train and avail themselves of the facilities on the train.
What did they do back in the steam days day, on freight trains? Well...there is the coal pile.
Another thing that makes "what the did in the days of steam" possible, is the fact that there weren't very many (read: "any") female engineers or firemen.

Reminds me of being in the U.S.A.R.N.G., and bivouacking in the woods, we had a latrine set up and had to use the, as some of you gals and guys know them as, 'WOODEN DEVILS,' as one of my friends referred to them, as!!!
They, were the latrine seats, made of wood, painted O.D. and for fun had splinters!!!!!!!!

The storm curtain, but not at high speed.
The total lack of humidity inside the cab takes care of a lot of the problem, as perspiration often evaporates so fast it it not noticed.
