hello. i am interested in buying a mth steam engine number 80-3274-1[which is ho] and my question is will it run on my nce system? i read where some of the ho mth engines only run on dc. the voltage on my ho track is ac but is there a way to make this engine i want run on my track or is it just dc voltage for the mth engines? thanks for the help. hope i explained it right.

All MTH engines that have proto3 can run on DC/DCS/DCC. Have fun.

To add a little bit more to the above, I believe all MTH HO engines are PS3 (Protosound 3). However, in MTH's other scales, not all engines are PS3.
I have 2 MTH SD70ACe engines, run them with my MRC prodigy elite system.
I have an MTH SP Gp38-2, and it runs amazingly on my NCE powercab. You cannot change any CVs unless you have a DCS though.
hello all. thanks for the replies. so what you all are saying is that this mth steam engine[ho] can run on my nce system. how come mth says dc only? my nce system puts out ac current so can this engine run on this or what am i missing.

i think all mth ho engine are dcc if 3.0 other wise they are dcc ready you just add the decoder plug and play eight pin plug
I don't think anyone is really answering your question. They are telling you what they have and about proto3. Call MTH tomorrow and get an answer.410-381-2580
NCE controls are all DCC, which is not true alternating current, as used in three rail O gauge. Any locomotive that has a DCC decoder should work with an NCE DCC system.

There are two versions of the MTH HO engines for sale. One is DCC equipped, one is DCC ready. So the OP needs to state which model # exactly he's looking at.
Maybe adding to the confusion were the very first releases of MTH HO engines that only ran with DC power?

He did: 80-3274-1. Which is a 2017 model w/3.0.

Yes. It will run with any DCC system. The primary concept of DCC is any decoder will respond to any system.
Just check to see if there's a DCC/DCS switch on the locomotive and if there is, it's in the DCC position. The O and S models have a switch, I'm just not sure about the HO models.

that's what speed reading a post does to me! Sorrrrry.
For the OP, some MTH engines are DCC ready which leaves them DC only.
MTH HO engines need DC. They do make an AC HO board for the 3rail HO

**AHEM** From an earlier post:
- 1:87 Scale Proportions
- Onboard DCC Receiver
Which means it will operate on a track with the DCC signal present, which is not a DC voltage.
While an MTH Proto3.0 locomotive will operate on DC, it doesn't need straight DC.

YES, this engine WILL run on your NCE system.
ALL MTH Proto 3.0 can run on AC, DC, DCS or DCC.
THANK YOU ALL

Not true for HO. Only the Marklin style 3 rail MTH HO boards are meant for AC I believe. Have not done much HO work recently. O and #1 gauge that is true. G

MTH S Scale will also run on AC, DC, DCC, or DCS.
I imagine the code is the same and the two-rail HO models will run on AC, but I can't think of any two-railers running HO on AC anyway.

I ran my 2 rail O scale with proto 3.0 through dcs with a Z1000 AC power supply. Also ran a HO K4 off of AC power.....
IT WILL WORK, I did it.
