Hi,

MJ and I had a wonderful dinner train ride on the Cape Cod RR. This was a surprise birthday present and we had a private table in the Dome Car.

The Dome car was a thing of beauty. Inside and out. The livery looks like Great Northern and it says "Empire Builder" on the side. It also says "Iowa Pacific.

Anyway - was wondering if anyone knows the heritage of this car. I tried the CCRR website but was unable to find the history.

Thank you

I owned a little history of this car at one time. I bought it from a guy that just wanted a wooden box laying in a dumpster. It was outside the old Great Northern headquarters. He took the box home and found a O scale hand made Great Northern Full Dome car. From the labels on the box it was shipped to different stations to show folks what this new car was going to look like. It's crude by todays standards. I think the metal trucks were Walthers. Kind of sorry I sold it now. DonDSC_0036 2DSC_0034DSC_0037DSC_0031

Yes, this car is the GN Great Dome Lounge “Prairie View”, which entered service on the Empire Builder in 1955.

Don, I saw another of those O scale Great Dome models at the GNRHS convention in Bellingham, WA in 2018. Apparently they were promotional displays for GN’s ticket offices in major cities. The one I saw had been repainted to Big Sky Blue. FYI
