I have an original MTH Big Blow I want to upgrade.  Right now, the smoke unit in the lead unit doesn't work, and I plan to replace.  The turbine unit smoke unit was noisy and intermittent, but I have fixed that issue.

So, since there are no slave boards, to upgrade both I would need two PS3 kits.  However, that's about 400 which is a lot to throw at this loco.  What are everyone's thoughts on upgrading the turbine unit only and removing everything but the smoke and lights from the lead unit?  Basically only the turbine unit would be powered.

Why some may ask?  This would allow me to redo the cab in the lead unit to make it more detailed.  I plan on doing some more detailing overall of this model and that would be my start.

As I understand the PS3 board can only run one smoke unit, is that correct?

If so, what options do I have for running the second smoke unit?

Does this plan sound feasible?  I won't ever pull more than 10-12 cars behind this train anyway.

Do you know how many speakers the board can drive?

As many as you like, as long as the resulting load is 4 ohms or greater.

The higher the ohms rating, the lower the volume. Less than 4 ohms can damage the audio amplifier on the PS3 board.

DCS Book CoverThis and a whole lot more is all in “The DCS Companion 3rd Edition!"

This book is available from many fine OGR advertisers and forum sponsors, or as an eBook or a printed book at OGR’s web store!

I don't remember specifics without going back to my notes, but if you have the 4 pin drawbar connection, that is a pita to convert to 10 pin harness.  You cannot run ps2 smoke without 4 wires, so you will lose coupler and lights and second speaker.  The alternate conversion is ps2 or ps32 with slave. But again the drawbar conversion is very hard and better to go with two ps2 or 3 upgrades, despite cost. G
