Just getting started with Legacy 990. I have one Legacy locomotive. The rest are TMCC. I did the quick start with one of my TMCC steam locomotives. The whistle blew, I switched from program to run. It starts to move then stops. Started reading up on 990 and realized that apparently, TMCC engines will only run in Cab 1 mode. Do I need to enter all the correct info (Cab 1, type of engine, type of sounds, etc) for TMCC engines to run with the remote? And if so, do I need to put the engine(s) back into program mode when I enter all of the information? Btw, the engine runs fine on conventional power.

Actually, TMCC locomotives will run in either CAB1 mode TMCC mode, or R100 mode. For R100 mode, if they don't have a motor driver with at least 100 speed steps, the throttle display will be incorrect.
Other than setting the command type and sound level, RS, RS5, Legacy, none of the other stuff will matter for just operating them.
Note that for a TMCC locomotive there is a locomotive type that may affect running, so being specific as to the exact model you're working with will help here.

Thanks for the info, John. It’s a Lionel 6-38055 Santa Fe 3751. My C&O 2696 Legacy Berkshire runs fine with the remote.
I know this isn’t an answer to your Question, but, since your running Legacy, I recommend getting 1 Cab1L remote as this particular remote runs TMCC engines more prototypically with slower starts and stops. Being that you have the cab 2 base, you just need the single remote. Several of my friends agree with this.
Now, you can give your 3751 an ID into the remote with all of the features similar to Legacy but just the TMCC features characteristic to the said engine/locomotive.
Welcome to Legacy, my favorite way to operate my layout. Happy Railroading Everyone

Wow. Had no idea. So I can use aCab 1 remote with the Cab 2 base? Does the remote recognize the base automatically?

No, not a Cab1, but a Cab1L. They are two different things.
A Cab1L will work with a Base 2, or even the new Base 3, coming soon. A Cab1 will not.

John, still didn’t answer my question as to whether the engine has to be in program mode when I make the settings.
Yes sir, it accepts the cab 2 base, all you need to do is give the Cab 1L remote the same frequency as the cab 2 base, like 1-9, if it’s 8, press 8 on the cab 1L then set and it will be on the channel selected. The directions are clear. You may go to my profile here on the forum and find my cell number and call. Thank you. Happy Railroading Everyone
NOTE, Cab 1 is no longer offered for sale on the new goods market, that particular system was discontinued years ago, replaced by the Cab 1L system. Just for your asking, if you buy a used Cab 1 set, there is a Y cable in the #990 Cab 2 set that allows you to connect the Cab 1 base to the Cab 2 system, then allowing you to used the Cab 1 remote to operate your trains. The Cab 1 is the first offering by Lionel to run our trains with Command. This system changed our way of running trains for the better and allows friends to run trains on our layouts together. It’s the best change I’ve seen in the hobby, running trains on three rail track. I love the advanced Legacy command system, Cab 3 base with APP, is also coming out soon and the Cab 2, Cab 1L will work fine with that system. Thank you
