Just put my new loco on the track and have two issues:

1. when using Cab 2 Legacy controller, whether I briefly use the whistle controller or press it up for 1.5 seconds (or longer) it only rings 4/5 times and then stops. I am not able to get it to ring constantly, as I can with my PRR SS2 steam loco with swinging bell. Any solutions?

2. the protruding parts from the pilot and trailing trucks (I assume are 3d rail pick ups?) sometimes catch on switch machines that came mounted to my Ross switches. Any solutions?

The third rail shoes do not require removal, even with imperfect track, at least not in my case. I have GG switches (mostly) with old RIX switch machines, however.

Turn the loco over and see it any of the shoes are misshapen/protruding - I've seen this - and it can be corrected with a gentle reshaping back to normal. This may be contributing to the issue. If the interference is very slight, a little file work on the shoe - or the switch machine box - may do it.

Hi Marty,

I tried that and it does not keep the bell on.

I have the CC2 and it works perfect. I can even get the bell to swing only once...or non-stop.

All my other Legacy locos with bell sound are equally responsive.

The new S2 will ring 5 times and stop. Next time it rings 4 times and stops. It cycles between 5 and 4 no matter what I do with the Cab 2 controller.

I emailed Lionel "Talk to us" and Angela  said "we need to bring in the engine" and she asked me for info so she could set up the RA.

I did ask her if my local Legacy repair person could do the repair (I gave her his name and location) and she said I could take it to him, which I will do tomorrow.

Interesting, when I run it in "sequence control" mode the bell will ring continuously as it gradually speeds up to about step 22. When it is slowed down it will begin ringing again at step 22, which is how it is supposed to work. However, I still cannot get it to ring continuously when I try to do it manually.

Once it is repaired, I will post again to this chain.

I recently bought one of these NYC S2 electric locos (6-84508) and I am seeing the same bell behavior described in this thread, no ability to turn on continuous ringing manually.  I was wondering if anyone had their engine serviced as suggested by Angela at Lionel and saw it corrected?  I did get it to work manually one time, but could never repeat it.  I'm not too bothered by it as I like the automatic sequence control mode.  Just wondering if it is a fixable problem.

Thanks in advance.

Zachariah,

Finally found the detail sheet on the repair:

"Returned bell coil drive board p/n 691CDV2A02 to Lionel Customer Service to be re-flashed. Re-flashed board allows the bell to ring continuously as long as bell button is depressed on the Legacy controller. It will actually continue as long as the button is held for four rings. "
