I used Home Depot's QuietBrace for my present layout as well as for the previous one because I could not find Homasote. After discovering QuietBrace, I never looked back - QB was cheaper and it worked just great.

Today I went to Home Depot and looked for QB just out of curiosity, and it was not there! Instead, they now have what they call "Squared Edge Asphalt Insulating Sheathing". It has the same dimensions; i.e., 1/2" x 4' x 8' and its price is $10.35. However, it is not as rigid as QB was, and it looks as though the coating (asphalt?) may more easily rub off.

Even though I really do not need anymore QB, I think it is a loss for model railroaders as it was a good and cheaper alternative to Homasote.

Thanks for the post Alex.  You pointed me to QuietBrace when I started rebuilding my layout and am just as satisfied with the product.  I can't see working with a "board" that is more flexible than QB, it would get a little out of control when moving or setting in place.

As always, thanks for the heads up.  I still need a few more boards and may have to settle for the new stuff.

If anyone hasn't seen Alex's videos on his spectacular Hidden Pass Railroad, check them out on YouTube... you will be impressed!

My best to Judy and Happy Holidays to you both.

Sounds like what wife & I ran into a few years ago...

We had been constructing some garden walls using a specific cement block found at HD.  A couple years later we decided to do more of the same, wanting matching block, of course, in order to unify the homestead appearance.  Returning to HD we found they no longer carried this specific brand/block....but a new supplier of a similar, but clearly NOT the same, block.  BUMMER!!   To make matters worse, the supplier of the block advised that the HD product had been somewhat unique, and there were no other local purveyors of the same block.

The HD associates on the floor told us 'this happens all the time!....management is constantly searching for better/lower cost/higher value products.....which may put year-to-year project continuity in jeopardy!'

And so it went.

Eventually we found a source for our block, but the additional mileage to find and haul ourselves in order to avoid costly delivery charges, made a more sizeable dent in the project budget than we had planned.   ouch.   Another lesson from the 'school of hard knocks.'

So, your encounter/find seems entirely plausible.   Not pleasant.  Certainly a disappointment.  But not surprising.

Our home depot has never carried Quiet Brace. When I asked at the store they had no idea what I wanted.

They now carry 440 1/2 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. R-1.2 Insulating Sheathing which is made by Homasote. It is referred to as "Composite Sound Board".

I didn't see it myself, I just found it on their website. I will look next visit.
