To follow up on the theme in the Ambroid kits thread I've started this one on offerings by Rail Craft Models. For background info on the firm check out the photos and catalog on this web page:  RAIL CRAFT info.  The undated illustrated catalog shows 7 different kits offered under the RAIL CRAFT Models brand by William Beeman.  The kits featured built up sheet metal bodies which the modeler completed by adding ladders, grabs, brake gear, and paint/lettering.  Several years ago I had the good fortune to find a built up Railcraft MP panel side gondola with a pipe load at a train show.  This eye level photo shows the very nice full brake rigging the builder applied to the under frame.  IMO the biggest shortcoming of the RAIL CRAFT bodies are oversized punched rivets. That said - they can makes an interesting addition to a transition era freight train.  If you have photos of nicely finished RAIL CRAFT cars please share them with us on this thread.

There's a story that Mr. Beeman was an industrial arts teacher in the St. Louis school system.  He did the dies and hired his better students to assemble the cars after school.  In those depression days the extra income was probably welcomed by the kids families.  I have the Wabash hopper and the MP gondola in my collection.  They look good on the track.  If anyone's interested, e-mail me.  I can post them on the "Sell" page.

What I like about most about the Rail Craft gondolas and hopper cars will make you cringe!  I like to hammer the inside walls of those rail cars to give a realistic battered look to the exteriors.  The thin sheet metal gives fairly easily for this effect.  Nothing worse than a funky old weathered hopper or gon models with dent-free sides.

Kinda morbid hammering them, but when it comes to REALISM, tough love is a good thing!
