Hello ,could anyone help with the names of the rail yards that serviced the major Detroit area for the auto industry in the sixties and seventies.  Detroit , Flint , Durand , Toledo , etc.

The following railroads went in or their freight cars servicing the auto industry , the names of their yards and

city is what I am looking for.

These railroads and any others you might know of .

Chesapeake and Ohio

Ann Arbor ,

DT&I

GTW

Detroit Toledo Shoreline

Thanks in advance Bernie .

The N&W has Oakwood Yard, they serviced the tri-level loading dock, and I believe they still do.  Conrail has Mack Yard for the Jeep North Plant, Mound Yard for Chrysler Truck, Sterling Yard for the Sebring. North Yard has a loading dock that was very busy in the 70's, the Detroit Terminal had a loading dock up til the 80's.  Most of these yards also served freight cars to the auto plants in the manufacturing area..The DT&I also had a new car loading facility.  The CSX also had a loading facility out in Novi for Ford's big cars...

Southern's "Pomona Yard" in Greensboro along with its 13 stall Roundhouse were named for the rural suburban community where they were located. In addition to servicing the rail equipment, also serviced were Pomona Cotton Mills, Western Carloading Company and, post WWII, Western Electric's Plant building the DEW Line System--all located close up against the Yard.

The Passenger Yard was downtown and had its own Switcher. Initially four railroads, all eventually owned or leased by Southern, converged on Greensboro. Both the Richmond & Danville and the Atlantic & Yadkin had their own Passenger and freight Depots and 0-4-0 slopeback switchers.

I guess to be more clear , what I am looking for is accurate names and locations

for example , on some boxcars , they would be stenciled

         WHEN EMPTY RETURN TO

            DT&I OTTAWA YARD

          DURAND , MICH.

So if anyone out there in the Michigan area , and model the railroads from around Detroit , do you know any other examples such as the above.

For  the C&O , NYC , GTW , Detroit Toledo Shoreline.

Thanks Bernie

The GTW in Flint had Belsay on the east side and Torrey yard on the west side.  They also had switch engines that worked the Chevrolet yard in Flint.
Pontiac had the main yard west of the Dixie Hwy & north of Johnson Ave.  There was also a yard at the Pontiac plant that used 4 switch engines.
Durand was just Durand.

Dewey, it's been a long time since I hearing the Western Carloading name.  I was there several times after they attempted to change to more over the road due to at that time inconsistant service.  The Western Carloading facilities in our area (Greensboro, Charlotte, Greenville, and Asheville) were fairly small facilities in today standards.  However, the facility in Los Angeles was massive.

There were several other freight forwarders in the south, Westranco and Arrow Lifschultz.  By chance, were they near Pomona Yard?
