I waited almost a year for this engine and the back truck dosent pick up power.  When the front truck goes over a switch i shorts out or dies. I got out of this hobby 10 years ago because a bad mth transformer would send a huge burst of power and blow the bulbs in the engines and short them out. To make it even better I just bought a dcs system that I havent used yet. I hope it is good.  Anyone have any ideas before I have to pay shipping on a engine AGAIN to send it back to be fixed under warranty.  If I sound mad its because I am.

Yikes.....

I have MTH and Lionel locomotives, but I am just starting up again myself. Here is what I would do. First, I would call MTH directly and ask to speak with their technical department. Yes....they will be very busy, may not have time and tell you it is the holidays, but if you can just get through and speak to someone they may be able to address the problem.

Being that the locomotive is new, it is therefore covered under warranty and MTH MUST make good on this period.

If you do not want to send the locomotive back, I for one would certainly understand, but fixing it may become a task that may involve more than just removing the shell or trucks. All of which are time consuming to anyone with little or no experience in doing these repairs. Also, many things can happen, once someone starts, which may void the warranty altogether and you sure don't want that to happen on such a nice locomotive.

I have the ES44AC DCS special club locomotive. It has all the MTH bells and whistles on it. If for a second I thought there was a problem, I would return her to MTH and let them have the headache and yes it would pain me greatly, but I cannot get this locomotive ever again.

If you have the patience and you were willing to wait a year for it to begin with, then do yourself a favor and let MTH address/fix the issue(s). That way you not only get the locomotive running properly, but she keeps her warranty intact as well.

That is what I would strongly recommend.

Best wishes.

I feel for you. I am hardly the expert up in here, but I understand the system very well. Perhaps, you can work something out. In my train store, they get folks all the time with old and new locomotives that do not work as they should and just weeks before Christmas. Then they want them too by Christmas day. Just not happening.

When I am there, I ask how possible it may be to simply purchase a new set. The owner will remove the track and transformer, thus reducing the overall cost of the set. That way, one can have a fully operational train set with a tested locomotive to boot.

Oh these locomotives can be so trying at times.........LOL

I seriously hope you will find a solution so you can get a train operating under your tree for Christmas. I'll pray for you.

If this was purchased at a local store they could fix it, or if you have an MTH tech near you.  Most likely this is a detached power or ground wire at the rear truck.

You say short, does it trip the transformer or does it just shutdown because it looses power?

I would make sure the center rail pickup screw is not loose.  After that the shell needs to come off.  Could be simple, but you need to be comfortable doing that. As stated above.

But the local dealer is an alternative to MTH.  G
