I purchased a Railking (MT-1103) NYC Hudson used from the local train store.

No problems running forward and reverse, bell and whistle work fine.  However, while running the sound "chug-chug" cuts in and out and the smoke works intermittently .  The battery was replaced with a BCR unit.

I have cleaned the track and am still having the same issue.

The box and manual do not show what type of sound (protosound 1 or 2?) this engine has.

I've just started getting into O Gauge so a lot of this new technology is quite confusing.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Smoke is independent of board.  It gets track power from engine via switch under engine.  So you need to see if it is getting consistent power.  Does the engine slow down when chuff cuts out?  You say it runs fine?   Doesn't sound like tether issue unless the engine is stopping or slowing down too.

In the manual do a reset 18 and try again for sounds.   But the smoke is separate.

Last are the wheels and pickup rollers clean and lubricated?  Could be intermittent power from dirty wheels and bad pickup rollers. G
