I need some help. We got the kiddo the MTH RAILKING NS SD70ACE set. It came with the little DCS remote. He was using the train and the ditch lights stopped working. Did he just hit the right combo of buttons to turn them off? The manual gives instructions for turning them on and off in AC Conventional mode but nothing about DCS. Any help would be appreciated!

Try This:
Instructions to reset an engine using the
DCS Remote Commander (DRC)
1. Apply power to the track through the DCS Remote Commander receiver.
The engine should be dark and quiet.
2. Press the following buttons, in order, on the DCS Remote Commander IR Handheld:
a. SND
b. DIR
c. “ – “(this is the large, grey rocker in the center that controls the speed –
you are pressing down on the bottom part of it by the “-“ indication)
3. The engine will give you a two honk response and will be sitting on the track running.
4. The engine has now been Factory Reset and is ready to run with your DCS Remote
Commander system.
If GGG's advice does not pan out, I would consider taking the whole affair back to where you purchased it from and seeing if they can come up with another set. Not sure if this is the newer freight set or the original with three Inter Modal cars.
I had this set and my SD70's ditch light went out period after only a few days. I happen to live near MTH in Columbia. I ran her up there and waited on the repair. Within an hour it was done and it worked great there after.
Normally the reset does work and it is unlikely that both ditch lights are inoperative. However, owing to the fact that these sets can sometimes get knocked around during shipping, sometimes things do happen. Hope you can get her fixed.

Since this set was delivered in 2012, it's extremely unlikely that it has the capability to be reset by the DCSRC handheld remote. That capability has only been introduced this year (2014).
Do you have a conventional transformer with bell and whistle button? If so there are instructions in the manual how to do a conventional reset using the Whistle and bell buttons.
1W and 5B in succession. You hear the same 2 toot confirmation when done right.
Otherwise as Pete said, take to a local shop and they can at least do a reset to see if it is a simple issue. Preferably a LHS that sells or services MTH. G
While they're doing the reset, maybe they can upgrade the chain files so that he can do any factory resets in the future using the DCSRC.
George and John's suggestions of a reset will most likely fix this. I would also take the suggestion of getting the new chain files installed. This will allow you to do the reset on your own in the future. The new sets have this ability already.

Take the shell off and check the connectors. This may be a unit with spring loaded contacts to light the headlight and ditch light. If so, it may not be making good contact. You JUST NEED TO BE VERY CAREFUL when putting shell back on not to PINCH any WIRES. Especially around the shell post and between shell and frame. G
I am not entirely sure you can reset this locomotive. Possible, but not sure. Again, if you are not having any luck with that. I would bring this locomotive to an authorized repair facility and allow them to address the issue and repair it. If you don't care about the ditch lights working and it is not cost effective to run around looking for a repair facility in your area, you might just leave them alone and operate your locomotive as it is.

All MTH PS-2 and PS-3 engine can be reset. Either conventional reset with transformer or a factory or feature reset via DCS. G
I was able to get the engine to reset with a conventional transformer. Unfortunately, this did not fix the problem. I will take the shell off and check the contacts when I can. The little guy seems content to play with it as is for right now. If that doesn't work I will get in touch with MTH. Thanks everyone so much for the advice, it is appreciated!
Edit: I live in Mississippi and my closest MTH service center is over 150 miles away. I did buy this from JR Junction in New Jersey.
