I purchased the Railmaster 23 ton boxcab and the Alco S2 kits from Jeff at Railmaster Hobbies in Bellflower, CA. Unfortunately I can't answer your question because I plan to power the 23 tonner with a NWSL gearbox and a motor cannibalized from an HO loco. The Alco S2 will most likely receive a Bull Ant drive from Hollywood Foundry. Another option are the Stanton drives from NWSL.
I have thought about just buying the shells, and doing something similar to what u describe, but the mechanism they sell looks like it would work fine, too.
