Railroads and RR suppliers were major components of the DJIA in earlier years. Here is the who's who of the listing:
American Car & foundry 1901-1927
American Locomotive 1915-1927
Baldwin Locomotive 1915-1924
Central pacific 1884-1885
CRRofNJ 1884-1885
CB&Q 1893-1895
CM&StP 1884-1895
C&NW 1884-1895
CRI&P 1893-1895
D&H Canal 1884-1895
DL&W 1884-1895
Gen'l Rly Signal 1927-1930
L&N 1884-1895
MoPac 1884-1895
NYC 1884-1893
NP (preferred) 1884-1895
UP 1884-1895
Presume a number of the financial panics (1893 and Oct 1929) contributed to knocking railroads and suppliers off the chart. What with the Union Pacific's strong financial performance, and the regular re-jiggering of the DJIA, maybe UP may show up again! Interesting to note that "widow's portfolio" Pennsy did not make the listing. Also interesting to note, later bankrupt CRI&P and Milwaukee, plus, teetring on the edge in the mid-50's, CNW, showing up in the 19th century.
