I have two post war Lionel engines that I would like to upgrade to ERR's Railsounds.  One is a 736 steamer and the other a Milwaukee Road 2338 diesel.  ERR offers various engine sounds but I can't seem to fine anywhere to listen to them to select the best fit for my engines.  I am new member to Ogauger and any help would be appreciated.   Also any input on installing the Railsounds systems would also be helpful.

Are these conventional or TMCC?  They obviously started out as conventional, are you considering upgrading to TMCC or just the sound?

Have you visited the ERR website and downloaded the RailSounds Commander installation instructions?  That would be the first step.  They're pretty easy to install, but for the steamer you'll have to mount a chuff switch to get the chuff sounds.

It would be nice if they had a sound 'Bite' of the sounds you will be hearing that you could listen to, to know what you are buying.  I know what you mean.  For your conversion the sounds available are pretty generic.  Look on the website.  They have them listed.  Different, more specific sounds are hard to come by.  Lionel likes to keep it that way.  Try to match one of the available sound boards to your engine type and it's a leap of faith maybe, but that's what it is.  It should be a rewarding project.  The sounds available are still pretty cool.

I think your # 736, a steam engine, would probably best be a match for the sounds that a fellow forumite from Argentina (?) used to convert a Polar Express engine.  He has a video with sound.  That is what you are looking at (hearing at?).  His name escapes me right now, but he has a video of his PE steamer with the sound board you would be buying, installed in it, chugging and whistling and talking away- I believe ERR calls it, sparing the flattery,  generic steamer board.  Check out his thread.  He did a nice job with his conversion. It may answer a lot of questions.  Someone please help with a name or a link to that.

John, I am running both of them in conventional mode. As of now I am staying with my ZW postwar transformer. I started out researching the ERR's Sound Commander 2 system but quickly found out that is no longer available.   I did download the Railsounds PDF instruction book and it does look pretty straight forward.  But as William mentioned it would be nice to hear the sound before purchasing the unit.  I like to know what I am buying.  My steam tender still works good but the new sounds are neat.

I found the thread I was talking about.  If you do a search for 'Electric RR TMCC upgrades'  started by Terrance, at the end of it is a video made by Leandro Garcia that you can hear the sounds for the ERR generic steam board.  They are the same as my first TMCC engine, the NYC Command Control special that came with the Command Base and a Cab1.  There is also give some good insight as to what it takes to do a conversion.  The sounds are good.

Thanks for the thread from Terrance,  allot of good information was posted.  The video from Leandro was also very interesting along with I now know what a generic whistle sound like.   Still up in the air on how to proceed.

Yep if you've come from the other scales where you can listen to sound bites of different companys sound decoders......Well your not in Kansas anymore Toto.

But all is not lost . You can go to youtube and listen to most of them steam and diesel both but don't get to excited. I can tell you the sounds are pretty generic.
Yea you gotta chuff and yea you gotta whistle but thats about all you can say about it.

Now that Lionel owns ERR they should step up to the plate and offer Railsounds 5.0
But this may be part of their not wanting to fool with TMCC anymore.

David
