I came across this website https://www.openrailwaymap.org/ the other day and found it to be VERY interesting.  I shows every rail line in the world, including abandoned lines.  Just zoom in on the region you want to explore and it will show you what lines are still in operation and where abandoned lines were located.  I followed a couple of local abandoned lines just to see where they went.  Easy to spend several hours following lines.

It is a good resource.  There is a lot of data and it has been consistently updated.  Like you, I have used it to see what railroad owned an abandoned right-of-way as well as where it came from and went to.  Sometimes it tells you the railroad, other times there is nothing.  Some lines are a little quirky where it will show the track as “H line” but not the railroad (CSX).
