I don't know much about Raleigh but I did live in Greensboro for 15 years.

There's the Train Loft in Winston but I don't know that I would waste my time. It's a small store jammed with MTH products. Can't say much good about the owner except he's got a lot of MTH knowledge. I learned to call before showing up and even then he (Jeff) might be out for a 3 hour lunch.

The Little Choo Choo in Spencer right across from the Spencer yards  . Not much in the way of O...mostly HO & N.

Each of those is probably 1.5 hrs. from Raleigh. Spencer is probably worth the trip if you've never been there.

There is quite a bit in Raleigh.  Start with Nick's Trains. He has a large variety both new and used in all scales.  Train Buddy in Wake Forest has new HO.  The Antique Barn in Wilson has a large variety, primarily HO.  BCPS Hobbies in Pinehurst is also good.

The Neuse River Valley Model Railroad Club is active .  We have layouts in HO, N, G, and O.  Also a large library.  Meetings are the 3rd Thursday at 7 PM, 1615 Old Louisburg Road.  Website is www.nrvclub.net.

There are also a couple of O layouts in the area, both 2 and 3 rail.

Thanks for the info.  I will see how mobile my son is, as he is recuperating but Spencer would be cool. Never been there.  Some years ago I gave him a nice Lionel Standard gauge set which he has never run. I plan to take some track and a transformer so I can run it. several of the hobby shops sound interesting.  I might end up living there some day-when I am old.
