When I re-built my layout 2 years ago and did scenery for the first time in years, I ballasted by placing the track in wet gray paint and sprinkling Woodland Scenics course ballast down and calling it a day. At the time, it was easy, worked well and looked good. Now, 2 years and plenty of derailments, accidents, and various things have removed much of the ballast leaving me with a lot of gray foam and bare spots and I want to redo it. I have attached a photo of what the layout looks like as-is currently. The ballast I used before was a bit small for my tastes and I found it to be a bit difficult to control. I have some Talus in a medium/small size and am thinking of using that since it is the size I want and what not. Has anyone used Talus as ballast before? I know that is not its purpose but I think that is what I may use. Anyone have any tips on securing it? Another thing I should mention is I am NOT going to remove and relay the track. I am just going to re-ballast over the existing ballast/foam. Any tips?

Thanks! Below is a photo of the track as-is.

Thanks. I decided to use WS again. Would you recommend 70% alcohol for a wetting agent? I have heard adding glue to it also helps. Any tips? Should I just use it straight up?

Thanks.

I use 50/50 white glue to warm water in mixing. I also add paint. I use "Burnt Umber" and add amounts to the mix until I get the color of the glue mix to a chocolate milk brown, or so. As for a slipperiness agent, I add dishwashing soap - a few drops.

Harry...If I color the glue mixture as you describe will it "darken" to basic white appearence of the chicken grit ballast?

Mike.....Awesome stone wall. Must have taken some serious patience and nerves to build that one stone at a time....
