I am planning on submitting an article to OGR for publication and was wondering if anyone knew if we had to use only fake company names on buildings unless you had a documented approval to use a real company name.  I had built a sign for the factory using a real world corporation and before I add it to the building wanted to make sure it would be acceptable.  I emailed the OGR editor on this but have not heard back yet.

Thanks!

I'm not sure that my article will be good enough for publication but wanted to at least not shoot myself in the foot on the building...

Legally, no. Trademark infringement requires that the mark be used in connection with the sale of the goods or services it is associated with, and the use must create a likelihood that consumers would be confused about the origin or sponsorship of the goods or services.  Putting a real company name on a model factory on a home layout would not cause either.

Of course, a magazine might have its own policies against such uses to avoid even worrying about such things, even if those uses are not actually trademark infringement.
