I spotted this train heading south toward Harrisburg yesterday, along the eastern shore of the Susquehanna river near Dauphin. It was odd seeing a NJ Transit engine so far from its home territory and was wondering if NS uses them for power or if it may have been just being transported somewhere for other reasons?thumbnail [37)

I would doubt the NJ Transit engine was “loading” or on line.  Odds are NS was delivering it to the commuter carrier.

To Bill’s comment; NS is currently attempting to address a shortage of locomotives by leasing used engines including a number of former BNSF engines in the so called “Grinstein” paint scheme.  UP, KCS, BNSF or other Class 1 engines you see on NS trains are either in run through service or on loan to balance out operating hours.

NS leases/buys other railroad used engines. I saw the other day a UP & CN running MU on NS track. No NS engine in the set. Just those two running MU. So that's my guess. I see UP engines running here quite often, but usually has a NS MU with it.

The 4513's been in service on the NJT for several years, so it's not a new delivery.

NS would have to be really hard up to lease a locomotive designed specifically for commuter service and press it into freight service.  I would agree with Jim, it's most likely going to/from Bombardier for work.
