Hello again everyone. I have a Lionel 6-38055 Santa Fe 3751 and the rear coupler is opening it's self all the time traveling down the track.  I have replaced the coupler and done both resets on the locomotive and cleaned the track. I have 20 other locomotives and I don't have this problem with any of them. I contacted Lionel on the Talk to Us email and never heard back from them so I thought I would ask everyone here for help with this issue. To use the locomotive now I just unplugged it. Thanks for the help.

Hi Chuck are you saying add a small non-polarized capacitor to one side of the wiring of the coupler? I don't have any capacitors I'd have to order some. Can you tell me what to order so I get the right one? We used to have a local Radio Shack but they all shut down. I'm hoping it's something that I can even get at Lowe's or Home Depot. Thanks

Gary

Gary, you want to use a 50 volt, 1 microfarad, non-polarized capacitor.  The non-polarized part is very important since a standard polarized capacitor could explode when it gets the AC pulse during uncoupling.

Like Chuck says, wire the capacitor across the two coupler leads (like you are shorting out the leads).  I've added lots of these to my TMCC locomotives.
