Has anyone experienced a bad IR sensor that they know of on a new engine. I have several engines with IR sensors and 2 sensor tracks and they all work as they should.

I don't see any loose plugs...I can get to the sensor board easily, but hesitate to replace it since I don't really know at which point the feature is malfunctioning.

Kind of hate to ship the engine back to Lionel...all else works and looks well.

Just thought I'd gather some data on it...if someone else solved the issue without sending it back...

I have had the same thing happened. I bought a set of the Baldwin RF16 in the Southern Pacific Daylight colors direct from Lionel. Not only did I miss out on a larger discount but then that day they were defective out of the box with the IR sensor not working. It took me to pay shipping to Lionel and 1 month later I got them back repaired and working.

So, yeah it has happened and it sucks. I agree that the IR sensor should work especially with the cost of getting the sensor tracks and LCS stuff as it is.

You might go to Lionel's website and see if there is a local service station that can have a look first. Might save you some time and shipping. Good luck.

Ok. I have determined that there is no IR being transmitted from the engine. I can see IR on a good engine with my iPhone camera, but nothing with this engine. I am tempted to think to measure if the IR board is getting +Voltage and Common and if the data wire is continuous...and just replace the IR board for $20 and that at least will tell me if I need to send the whole engine in, thinking that it is something more in the Railsounds Lite board.

Well I changed out the sensor and the little board it connects to and checked the wires  and the wires from that board run into the main sound board on my es44 . I just haven't tried a different board yet but i am certain in my case it's that on mine witch I am not wanting to do cause it's a 100 board .

Did they list the replacement part on the invoice?
