Are you using the recharger in the base? Does it get hot? Many have problems with it and dont use that feature. I'm just asking because you asked what recargerables are best and I'm thinking maybe your base charger ruined your batteries.

You can order some of the originals from Lionel or they also recommend the Radio Shack one. I was using Sanyo Eneloops, which I love, but Lionel told me never to use those in my handheld, I would say avoid any of the batteries which advertise themselves and "PreCharged" or brag of long shelf life, these are a new type which Lionel says to avoid
