Barry's book says on page 147 to place engine on track that has 10-12 volts on it.

Why 10-12 volts? The Z-750 brick I'm using puts out 21 volts and the Z-1000 puts out 18 volts (I think). We're told not to use the controllers with the bricks when plugging them to the TIU, so there's nothing to reduce the voltage coming out of the brick.

Seems kinda odd that I'd have to put the engine on a separate piece of track with another power supply just to charge the battery.

Without grabing the book, I believe you're describing charging a battery in conventional mode?
Charging with DCS signal through the TIU will work at full voltage. Just let it sit there without pressing startup. Run other engines if you want while this one sits on powered track.
When I don't run for a while, I'll let things charge this way. Engines then respond better. (See page#146,bottom) Joe
