I have a lionel diesel locomotive from the 90s or late 80's. It's a lehigh valley number 8800. It doesn't have a smoke unit in it but I would like to add one by opening up holes in the two oval stacks and adding a smoke unit. What is the preferred way to do it that would allow me to add smoke easily through the stacks? I know the legacy locomotives have a removable top and an internal funnel to the smoke unit. Could I use the same setup in my loco? Thank you.

You can certainly use the TMCC or Legacy F3 smoke funnel in those. Another interesting option, I have an F3 TAS smoke unit that has a built-in funnel, it was used in 3rd Rail F3 models. Apply power and you get smoke.
Ignore the nut stuck to the motor, I didn't notice it picked that up. The magnet in that little motor must be pretty good!

The F3 unit looks nice. I wonder if the two stack locations in the locomotive shell would line up with the locations in the smoke unit funnel? The look like the same oval shape.
I was looking at this combination of smoke unit and funnel on lionel website. not sure if they are supposed to go together or if this combination would even work for my application. I don't have legacy control either so I'm also not sure if it would even work with traditional CW or ZW transformers:

Do you have a link to the F3 smoke unit and funnel combo in your post?
The smoke unit you list needs a power supply for the fan and also a regulator for the smoke resistor.
I have no link for the smoke unit I posted, I just happen to have an extra one in my parts box. Drop me an email if you want it.
