Recommendations for Digital Video

Pls. share any recommendations you have for a digital video camera for train videos of layouts. Pls. indicate whether digital cameras with video capabilites (such as the Nikon D5200 or Canon T41) are suitable for this purpose or not, or if a separate digial video recorder is recommended. I would like a video camera for multipurpose uses, kid's sports, trains, dog, etc. Thanks.
