I purchased a undec Red Caboose GP9 with the stock drive in it.  It uses a Pittman motor with flywheels and the old Atlas/Roco trucks.  I placed it on the track straight out of the box and it ran surprisingly well.  It no couplers installed so I attached it to six All Nation freight cars with a piece of wire. It pulled them with no problem.

I had planned to install a new frame with some Weaver drive components that I have but I think I may leave it stock.  I believe it will do fine on my meager 12 x 16 layout. Now I have the detail and paint it.  Trying to decide on Columbus & Greenville or Illinois Central green diamond scheme.  The C&G locos were actually GP7’s so I more than likely go with the IC.

I think it's a fine model. As I mentioned elsewhere, mine came to me already built; had a couple of split axle gears (as per usual) and only 3 of the axles had gears.  ???

Got a set of NWSL replacements, and it runs quiet, smoothly and will pull as many cars as I want. The fine details (like Intermountain cars) are a bit too fragile for my liking, but what the heck.

Thanks Mark.

I have an unbuilt undec RC GP-9 in the queue, purchased years ago, later I bought a P&D drive to replace the Roco-like power truck as I intended to mu it with my US made Weavers, some years later I read that the frame replacement ($60 from Des Planes last I checked) is an important add-on for a variety of reasons, and now I look at the whole exercise as a bit much, still may go with that frame replacement but it's dropped way down in my pending project list. I'd rather spend that brand of  tedium modeling a specific passenger train. More "bang for the buck" for me.

I have a bunch of these.  I will modifying some to be N&W Red Bird and Blue Bird passenger engines.  I have to remove the air tanks, extend the fuel tank and put the air tanks on top of the fuel tanks.  Des Plaines Hobby has all the lift rings, steam generator stacks and other items for modifications.  The NWSL replacement gears are high recommended if you don't use the P&D replacement drives.
