Gentlemen,   I'm finding out I'm not alone in the idea of the L.I.R.R. theme for a layout.  I must be 1 in a Hundred Thousand interests in the MTH production of the G5's #35 & #39,  Being immersed in family n career n scouts for a number of yrs after the mpc yrs, i wasn't aware of the amount of hobbyshops that were doing their own pre-orders for this idea.  thou the prices when i found out were abit scary !  so anyway, realizing there nil to none i started reorganizing my hobby bench an work area digging out all my ole modeling tools.  found my ole air-brush to start cleaning an fixing / restoring items that needed it an items i wanted to change = like a box car for the LIRR.  looking here, ebay an other forums i'm finding many many G5's like Penn. the typical grimy black with the tuscan red cab roof an tender back deck.   soo i thought if i can get the right decal's i'd have to do some splash sprays to fix the road names.  BUT then it became MORE then just getting the best locomotive for the best price.   HERE"s the question = why is there soo many Penn G5'''s on the market ???    IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG & NOT LIVING UP TO THE PROMOTIONS OF THIS BEAUTIFUL ENGINE ?           I'd appreciate any info on this - as to not wanting to get too deep in this & wait it out like many other items i've been acquiring over the last 12 - 15yrs working into retirement.    'sunrise trial'  regards, Doug

I own two MTH Premier G-5s models - PRR #5740 (20-3031-1 with PS1 delivered in March 1999) and LIRR #21 (20-3068-1 with 5-volt PS2 delivered in December 2001) that I purchased when new. I installed a BCR in both models soon after purchase. Both models have been completely reliable in operation for more than twenty years and have been run frequently during that time. They've required only lubrication and traction tires. I've posted them on the Forum many times. Here is a link to a recent Forum post I made showing photos and videos of both models. I can say that these two models have been entirely satisfactory for me and I've gotten my money's worth from them.
