The nameplate is held on with either hex head screws or drive screws. The hex head screws are removed with a nut driver. For drive screws, they need to be "unscrewed", but the head is not usually conducive to that so one uses a Dremel to slot them or to square them off. They also can be drilled out. Sometimes you get lucky and can pry them a bit to the point you can get a good grip with locking pliers to twist out.

Unfortunately there are not many V or Z transformers with the hex head screws holding on the faceplate. Most of the time you have to deal with the drive screws.   In this application the challenge is to get the drive screw out without scratching the faceplate. Once I get the drive screws out I replace them with hex screws. I have to wonder what Lionel was thinking when they used drive screws in this application.  The faceplate has to come off to get to the screws that hold the upper case together. This is where the carbon rollers are that need to be inspected and frequently changed.
