removing chrome finish

Try isopropyl alcohol, 99%.  Available at discount pharmacies.

 

 

Try it on a small section as a test.  Remove as many parts from the car as possible, submerge in the alcohol and check every 30 minutes.  Scrub with an old toothbrush and rinse/dry completely before priming.

Disclaimer => I have used this method on many cars but not AF.

I have used straight Bleach to remove the chrome from plastic model auto parts in the past.  Just soaked the chrome plated plastic parts in the bleach and the plating came off in a short time.  Then just rinsed the parts in water to get rid of the bleach on them.

Has anyone else used these methods with satisfactory results?

I used oven cleaner to remove the chrome.  It did not effect the plastic.

I've used oven cleaner as well and I didn't have any problems with the plastic. 

 

Be careful though as you are messing around with sodium hydroxide as I seem to remember. A must to wear face mask and protective gloves etc.

I too would like to know. I was got to post this very question. I have Kline pass cars that the chrome ends are flaking.  Trainfever let us know how you make out.

I may be wrong, bit I suspect that the chroming process on the 53-54 vintage AF cars is different from the chroming process on the 21st century K-Line cars. That would make removel processes different.
