There is no easy way to accomplish this task. Many different paint types have been used over the years and sometimes the lettering is a different composition than the paint. I have used different methods over the years from chemicals to sanding with varying degrees of success. There is no one method fits all solution. The last project I removed numbers on was one of my MTH C628 shells that I renumbered. I had to use a q-tip and a toothpick with lacquer thinner, then buff with automotive rubbing compound to get the numbers off. It worked well but was a lot of work. I have also used ELO, (Easy Lift Off) by Polly scale, IIRC, and it worked okay on some other stuff. I would not recommend Lacquer thinner unless you are very precise and light handed with it, but it has worked for me on a project with decent results. Here are a few pictures of the shell I renumbered. The "7"'s are decals. There were "1"'s there from the factory.
