A friend has a BN caboose, and asked me to remove a bit of lettering from it.I have no experience with MTH stuff; and suggestions or advice? Thanks.

Wet sand with 800 or 1000 grit sandpaper very carefully. MTH lettering is very tough to remove. Someone once told me 90% isopropryl alchohol will work with a cotton swab rubbing gently. I had the best luck with the wet sanding.
I wet sand as well, using Testors "ultra-fine" sandpaper. (It's described as 600 grit, but I think its actually finer). I posted a photo in the photo forum of an in-progress project in which I am removing cab numbers from an Atlas GP35. Two digits are removed using wet sanding and two still to go. This technique takes patience, but I have more confidence in it than in chemicals.
I've also used this on an MTH engine, though the numbers on that one were not applied with heavy paint. Some MTH numbering is applied with a fairly heavy paint and thus is more stubborn.
Wow, if I hadn't seen it for myself I wouldn't have believed it could be done. It would help to have fingers about 1/8" wide though.
