I wet sand as well, using Testors "ultra-fine" sandpaper. (It's described as 600 grit, but I think its actually finer). I posted a photo in the photo forum of an in-progress project in which I am removing cab numbers from an Atlas GP35. Two digits are removed using wet sanding and two still to go. This technique takes patience, but I have more confidence in it than in chemicals.

 

I've also used this on an MTH engine, though the numbers on that one were not applied with heavy paint. Some MTH numbering is applied with a fairly heavy paint and thus is more stubborn.
