Unless you are VERY handy, I recommend not taking it apart. If you can replace the coupler without separating the motor mount from the gear box, you will be ahead of the game.
If you are determined, then place a cookie sheet on the workbench and work over that.
To take the truck off
-remove the shell
-remove the screw on the bottom of the truck
-remove the screw on the top of the truck that holds the electrical pick up to the gear box
Now the gear box can be separated from the motor, but be careful. When you separate the two, the main drive gear shaft, which contains the worm wheel, the main idler gear and two bushings and shims will fall off onto the work bench, the floor, or wherever you are working.
The bushings have a flat side, which must face down, towards the gear box and wheels. There are usually clear shims between the flat surfaces of the bushings and the gear box/wheels. These shims are easily lost and are hard to find. Also, when reassembling the whole thing, the ridges on the bushings must fit into the grooves on the motor mount, and the shims must be on the flat spots, not on the round sides of the bushings.
