A friend has a UP 8702 Northern with Sound of Steam from 1980.  The loco works fine but the tender is suffering from a broken truck.  The truck has the Sound of Steam pickup/chuff sensor mechanism.  The side frame is broken and seems unrepairable.   Lionel and other train repair shops claim the parts for the truck and for the Sound of Steam are not available.  Is there anyone out there that may be able to come up with the appropriate truck and SOS parts if needed?  As an alternative, can anyone confirm that the tender shell could be placed on a Railsounds 2046W style chassis?

Thanks,

The UP engine from 1980 would be the 8002 Berkshire.  It has six wheel trucks

that are replaceable.  The trucks have nothing to do with the sound of steam,

the tender plugs into the engine.  There is a foam pad that the sound board is

sitting on in the tender that needs to be replaced so the board doesn't fry.

To answer your original question, Yes the shell will fit on a 2046 frame.  I have

this same engine and upgraded with the Railsounds tender.

A couple of things here... the 8702 is the original Southern Crescent 4-6-4 Hudson, which was catalogued from 1977 to 1978.

The 8002 is the 1980 Union Pacific Berkshire (although the real UP loco was a northern.)  Unlike its Chessie sister made the same year, the UP version DID use something on the tender truck to modulate the chuffing sounds.

This truck could be a fairly unique part, because earlier locos DID use a feed from the smoke unit, and later ones used die-cast six wheel tender trucks.  I would consult the diagrams on Lionel.com for a part number.

If you're not concerned about collectability, switching to the six wheel die-cast trucks from the 8404 Turbine, etc. would be one way to go.
